Victory for Palestine Action: Hunger Strike Ends After Key Demands Met (2026)

A powerful statement of resistance has emerged from behind bars, as three Palestine Action protesters end their hunger strike, while four others choose a different path. But the question remains: was it worth the risk?

These activists, affiliated with Palestine Action, had been on a hunger strike to protest the potential awarding of a £2bn contract to Elbit Systems UK, an Israeli arms company subsidiary. The strike gained momentum, with Heba Muraisi, 31, reaching 73 days without food, mirroring the survival record of Irish republican hunger striker Kieran Doherty in 1981. The stakes were high, as the earliest death among the Irish republicans occurred after just 46 days, sparking fears for the lives of these protesters awaiting trial for their involvement in Palestine Action demonstrations.

Their demands were clear: shut down Elbit Systems, a company targeted by Palestine Action for its UK operations. And their efforts seemed to pay off. On Wednesday, Prisoners for Palestine announced a significant victory: the government's decision not to grant the contract to Elbit Systems UK, which would have trained 60,000 British troops annually. This decision, they believe, signals a shift in official thinking, as Elbit Systems has secured over 10 public contracts since 2012.

But here's where it gets controversial. The Ministry of Justice arranged a meeting between national prison healthcare leaders and representatives of the hunger strikers, addressing prison conditions and treatment recommendations. This move suggests a potential acknowledgment of the protesters' concerns. Kamran Ahmed (day 66) and Lewie Chiaramello (day 46), who has type 1 diabetes and fasted every other day, also ended their strike, along with Teuta Hoxha, Jon Cink, Qesser Zuhrah, and Amu Gib, who had temporarily paused their strikes.

The refeeding process, as Prisoners for Palestine noted, is a delicate one, carrying its own risks. However, Umar Khalid, 22, continues his hunger strike, undeterred.

The group celebrated several achievements, including 500 new recruits for direct action against the military-industrial complex, surpassing Palestine Action's five-year campaign numbers. They also highlighted the closure of four Israeli weapons factories during that campaign and vowed to shut down Elbit Systems permanently, driven by people power rather than government intervention.

Muraisi's transfer back to HMP Bronzefield in Surrey, closer to her loved ones, was another victory. Hoxha's meeting with the head of the joint extremism unit at her prison, which Prisoners for Palestine claims labels prisoners as 'terrorists', is a step towards addressing censorship and mistreatment.

The hunger strike has left a lasting impact, as Gib's words resonate: 'We will decide how we give our lives to justice and liberation.' But the debate continues: was the hunger strike a necessary sacrifice, or could there have been other ways to achieve these goals? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
