UNCF's Dr. Michael Lomax Honored by ADL for Fighting Hate & Promoting Unity (2025)

In a world where division and hatred often dominate headlines, a powerful reminder of unity and courage emerged at the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) 2025 Concert Against Hate. But here’s where it gets truly inspiring: UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax was honored as a Champion of Justice, alongside three other remarkable individuals—Marion Ein Lewin, Wesley Seidner, and Mayor David Holt—for their unwavering commitment to fighting hate and defending democracy. And this is the part most people miss: their stories aren’t just about awards; they’re about the enduring bonds between communities and the courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.

Dr. Lomax, a lifelong advocate for education and unity, received The Kay Award, which celebrates extraordinary acts of courage in confronting intolerance, injustice, extremism, and terrorism. Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO, aptly noted, ‘At a time when hate is all too prevalent, these individuals remind us that courage comes in many forms.’ From Dr. Lomax’s dedication to bridging divides to Wesley’s fearless advocacy as a young leader, Marion’s resilience as a Holocaust survivor, and Mayor Holt’s transformative leadership, each honoree embodies the best of humanity.

But here’s the controversial part: Dr. Lomax’s recognition as an ally to the Jewish community sparked a deeper conversation. He shared, ‘Honestly, it’s a surprise to be getting an award as the ally, because the Jewish community has always been an ally to the Black community, to my family, to me.’ This mutual support, he emphasized, is a relationship over a century old, yet one that has frayed in recent years. His call to revitalize this bond and foster connections between Black and Jewish youth is both bold and necessary. Isn’t it time we ask ourselves: How can we strengthen these alliances in our own communities?

Dr. Lomax’s commitment is more than words. Through the Tikkun Olam Initiative, launched in collaboration with the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism (FCAS) and Hillel International, students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominantly White institutions (PWIs) are coming together to build cross-cultural understanding. Since 2024, 12 Unity Dinners have been hosted across the country, with more planned for 2026. This initiative isn’t just about dialogue; it’s about cultivating a new generation of leaders committed to social justice and equity.

The honorees’ stories are equally compelling. Marion Ein Lewin, a Holocaust survivor, has dedicated her life to sharing her story of resilience and hope. Wesley Seidner, a high school senior and grandson of a Holocaust survivor, has fearlessly combated antisemitism in his school and beyond. Mayor David Holt, Oklahoma City’s first Native American mayor, has been a transformative leader in uniting communities and combating hate.

As we reflect on their achievements, one question lingers: What does it mean to be a champion of justice in today’s world? Dr. Lomax’s answer is clear: ‘We need to reinforce the bonds we’ve had with the Jewish community and work together to create a better world.’ Let’s not just applaud these heroes—let’s join them in building bridges and standing against hate. After all, as the ADL’s mission reminds us, justice and fair treatment for all aren’t just ideals; they’re imperatives.
