Uncover the Enigmatic World of John & Yoko: A New Film Reveals Rare Footage of The Beatles Legend in Syracuse
A captivating documentary film, 'One to One: John & Yoko', has recently premiered on HBO, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of John Lennon and Yoko Ono during the early 1970s. The film showcases their intimate life in a Greenwich Village apartment, their social activism during the Vietnam War, and the restored footage of their 'One to One' benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, Lennon's sole full-length show post-Beatles.
However, the documentary also unveils never-before-seen footage of Lennon and Ono at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. This 'unfinished' exhibition, Ono's inaugural solo museum show, opened on October 8, 1971. Ono herself described it as 'unfinished' because, she says, 'every piece in this exhibition is also growing because people add things to it'.
The documentary captures a massive crowd of over 6,000 people who gathered at the Everson Museum to catch a glimpse of Lennon and Ono. It also shows the couple having a private meal in the museum's lobby while fans watched from the balcony. The exhibit included some of Ono's unique pieces, such as a partially eaten apple starting to rot, a boy hammering a piece of metal, empty picture frames, and a girl who bumped into a wall inside a glass maze. Even the renowned beat poet Allen Ginsberg read a poem as part of the exhibit.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, the documentary includes simulated TV channel-surfing scenes, featuring car commercials, news reports, phone calls, and television broadcasts. This is intended to mimic how Lennon and Ono learned about America by extensively watching TV and to provide context for the songs performed during the 'One to One' concert.
Macdonald shared his thoughts with IndieWire, stating that the film resonates strongly with teenagers and young adults, who find it relatable due to its TikTok-like experience of the world. They are inspired by the simplicity of John and Yoko's message, 'Let's get out there and change the world', and are not deterred by not knowing every person involved. They pick up the story as they go, making it a fun experience.
The documentary also features executive producers Brad Pitt and Sean Ono Lennon, the couple's son, who has newly remixed the music for the documentary. Sean Lennon believes the concert footage will showcase his mother's singing talent in a way she hasn't been given credit for. He acknowledges that her experimental vocalizations might not be appreciated by everyone, but he believes her conventional songs are equally beautiful and deserve attention.
Ono, who now lives on an Upstate New York farm she bought with Lennon, married the Beatles singer in 1969 and had one child together, Sean. Her 1971 art exhibit in Syracuse attracted thousands of visitors, including celebrities like Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, and actor Dennis Hopper.
John Lennon, who was tragically killed by Mark David Chapman in 1980, is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters in music history. As a solo artist, his hits included 'Imagine', 'Woman', 'Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)', 'Jealous Guy', and 'Happy Xmas (War is Over).' Lennon, along with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, were internationally famous as The Beatles, with hits like 'Let It Be', 'In My Life', 'I Want to Hold Your Hand', 'Come Together', 'Help!', and 'All You Need is Love'.
