Coffs Businesses Join Forces for Parkinson's Awareness and Support
Coffs Harbour is gearing up for the ninth annual 'Pump It For Parkinson's' campaign, which kicks off at midnight on Friday, October 24th. This initiative is a testament to the power of community support and its ability to make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by Parkinson's disease.
The campaign's primary goal is to raise funds to ensure the presence of a dedicated Parkinson's Specialist Nurse in Coffs Harbour, catering to the Mid North Coast Local Health District. This nurse plays a crucial role in providing specialized care and support to individuals and families affected by Parkinson's.
This year, a diverse range of local businesses and community groups have come together to support the cause. The Bailey Centre Liberty Service Station and PK Express, long-standing advocates, are joined by new partners such as The Paradox Agency, The Edge Real Estate, Coffs Neuro Physio, Mid North Coast Allied Health, and Mentors for Men.
The campaign's success is evident in the increased contributions, rising from 17 cents to 28 cents per fill-up. This financial boost has enabled the dedicated Parkinson's nurse to provide specialized care to over 1000 families in the Coffs Coast region over the past decade. On average, five individuals and their families require this service every month, highlighting the ongoing need for community support.
A recent development in the campaign is the establishment of a Parkinson's NSW-backed support group in Woolgoolga. This group, guided by the specialist nurse, aims to extend support and connections to individuals with Parkinson's in the Upper Mid North Coast area.
The availability of advanced therapies for Parkinson's in Australia is another positive outcome of the campaign's efforts. Thanks to the specialist nurse's ongoing care, these therapies are now accessible locally, improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease.
Alan Bailey, from Bailey Centre Management, expressed gratitude for the community's support, sharing a personal connection to the cause. David Strickland, owner of PK Express, has been involved in the fundraiser for many years, driven by his personal experience with friends and acquaintances affected by Parkinson's.
Kelsie Grieve, Operations Manager at The Paradox Agency, emphasized the agency's commitment to supporting local initiatives that make a tangible difference in the community. David Conway, from The Edge Real Estate, highlighted the company's leadership philosophy, emphasizing the importance of connection and care in their support for the campaign.
Aaron Hardaker, Managing Principal at Mid North Coast Allied Health, shared the group's motivation for supporting the fundraiser, emphasizing the impact of exercise on individuals living with Parkinson's. Amanda O'Neill, Director and Neurological/Vestibular Physiotherapist at Coffs Neuro Physio, underscored the daily impact of Parkinson's disease and the crucial role of local specialist nurses in improving lives.
