A Political Shakeup: Governors Abandon the PDP, But Why?
In the midst of a leadership crisis rocking Nigeria's main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), a wave of defections has left many questioning the future of the bloc. Several governors, once loyal to the PDP, have made bold moves, sparking controversy and leaving political analysts scratching their heads.
The Great Exodus
Let's dive into the details. Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, made headlines when he announced his departure from the PDP, citing approval from higher authorities. This move came just a day after a secretive meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. Fubara emphasized that his decision was not driven by personal gain but by the best interests of the state.
But here's where it gets controversial... Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, followed suit, officially joining the Accord Party on December 2, 2025. Adeleke blamed the persistent leadership turmoil within the PDP for his exit, a decision he claimed was made after consulting with party officials in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government, on November 4, 2025.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, also jumped ship, joining the APC on October 14. Mbah explained that his move was motivated by a desire to serve the people of Enugu better and align with the APC's vision for development. He brought along members of the National Assembly, state House of Assembly, councillors, and other influential politicians, causing quite a stir.
Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, quickly followed, announcing his defection to the APC within 24 hours of Mbah's move. Diri defended his decision, stating it was in the best interest of the state, and even hinted that he wasn't alone, with 23 members of the state House of Assembly joining him.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, left the PDP for the APC on April 23, with the state Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, stating that the move was to strengthen the state's bond, advance security and welfare, and ensure development.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, switched to the APC on June 6, 2025, citing concerns about electoral victory under the PDP. Eno expressed that while they had worked hard, the party's national performance was not up to par.
And this is the part most people miss... Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, initially planned to defect to the APC on November 19, but postponed his move following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State. However, the APC Chairman in Taraba State, Ibrahim Tukur, confirmed that Kefas will officially join the party in January 2026.
The PDP's Remaining Strongholds
As of December 2025, the PDP still holds onto these states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Plateau, Zamfara, Oyo, and Taraba.
The APC's Growing Ranks
Since 2023, the APC has welcomed these governors: Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, Bayelsa, and Rivers.
