Naomi Osaka Apologizes for On-Court Interview After Heated Exchange with Sorana Cirstea
The Australian Open tennis tournament witnessed a heated exchange between Naomi Osaka and Sorana Cirstea during their second-round match. The incident occurred at the net after the match, where Cirstea appeared annoyed by Osaka's energetic behavior, yelling 'C'mon' between serves. The tension escalated when Osaka was asked about her performance during the on-court interview, leading to an emotional response from the four-time major champion.
Osaka, visibly rattled, admitted to hitting a lot of unforced errors but emphasized her best efforts. She acknowledged the anger Cirstea felt towards her 'C'mon' shouts, stating, 'I mean, I tried to play well, I think I hit a lot of unforced errors, but I tried my best. She’s a great player, I think this was her last Australian Open, so, OK, [I’m] sorry she was mad about it.'
In her post-match press conference, Osaka apologized for her remarks, explaining that emotions were high for Cirstea, who is retiring at the end of 2026. She admitted to being confused about the situation, saying, 'Well, if I’m being honest, I’ve never been involved in something like this before, so it’s like I don’t know if we’re supposed to leave it on the court and be like, ‘Hey, how [are] you doing?’ [in the locker room].'
Cirstea, a former world No. 21, remained tight-lipped about the exchange, stating it was a minor chat between players. She focused on her career milestones rather than the post-match interaction, saying, 'I will not talk about that. Look, this is my last Australian Open, I’ve been playing for 20 years, and I think it’s a bit more going on than just a five-second discussion at the end that I’ve had with Naomi.'
Despite the incident, Cirstea's focus remained on her performance, acknowledging Osaka's superior play in the latter stages of the match. She concluded, 'No, there was no drama, it was just a five-second exchange between two players that have been on a tour for a long time. It stays between us.'
Moving forward, Osaka will face Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis in the third round on Saturday. She revealed a recurring shoulder injury, which required a medical timeout on Thursday night, but remained optimistic about her performance in the third set.
