Here’s the verdict that’s bound to break the internet: Die Hard is not, apparently, a Christmas movie. Shocking? Maybe. But after years of playful family feuds, heated pub debates, and holiday dinners turned awkward, a new poll claims to have settled the matter once and for all.
According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), 44% of people say the Bruce Willis classic simply doesn’t qualify as festive fare. Meanwhile, 38% still passionately insist that Die Hard belongs in the same category as Home Alone and Elf—and an additional 5% even crowned it their ultimate Christmas favorite. The remaining 17%, perhaps exhausted by the argument altogether, cautiously answered: “Not sure.” Can you blame them?
But here’s where the debate takes an amusing twist. Back in 2018, Bruce Willis himself chimed in on the controversy during a comedy roast, declaring with characteristic bluntness, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. It’s a Bruce Willis movie.” That remark didn’t exactly cool the discussion—it fueled it. And more recently, Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin joined Team Bruce, insisting, “It’s just a movie set at Christmas. It could just as easily be set at St. Patrick’s Day.” Cue the audience boos… but you have to admit, he might have a point.
Still, not every poll question caused such a festive uproar. When asked to name the best Christmas film of all time, Home Alone easily topped the charts with 20% of the vote. Love Actually followed at 9%—and perhaps might’ve won outright if Alan Rickman’s character had treated Emma Thompson’s a little better. Classic It’s a Wonderful Life claimed third place with 8%, and holiday favorite Elf came in a close fourth with 7%.
As for Christmas movie habits, the BBFC found that 43% of people think the start of December is fair game to begin the binge, while 13% don’t wait that long—they dive in as early as November. A devoted 8% confessed they watch these films all year round, likely enjoying a quiet laugh whenever they’re home alone.
So, is Die Hard truly disqualified from the Christmas canon, or is it just an unconventional holiday masterpiece? The poll says no—but the debate isn’t going anywhere soon. What do you think? Should Die Hard remain a festive staple, or is it time we finally retire it from the Christmas movie list?
