The House Oversight Committee is broadening its investigation into a health services contractor led by a Somali community, linking it to potential widespread fraud involving alleged Medicaid payments in Maine. This development could lead to significant consequences.
Committee members are urging Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to release critical banking documentation related to Gateway Community Financial Services, a contractor operating in Maine. Previously, the committee had been looking into possible fraudulent activities associated with Somali individuals in Minnesota.
Recently, the committee has acknowledged the role of NewsNation’s reporting in uncovering potential Medicaid fraud in Maine, which may connect this health services contractor to larger malfeasance.
In response to revelations from a whistleblower, Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services has already halted Medicaid payments to Gateway. The whistleblower, Chris Bernardini, informed NewsNation that the state’s Medicaid program was being misused, with residents being charged for services that were never rendered.
State audits conducted from 2015 to 2018 revealed that Gateway had overbilled the state by approximately $662,000. Consequently, the company received two violation notices, and Maine’s Health and Human Services is currently trying to recover more than $537,000 from them.
Despite these allegations, Gateway officials maintain their innocence regarding the accusations highlighted by NewsNation's investigations. In a statement released on Friday, they acknowledged that they were informed about the cessation of Medicaid payments but asserted their commitment to investigating the claims while reiterating their position of no wrongdoing.
Gateway further expressed their willingness to cooperate with any investigations led by the oversight committee, which has already identified the company’s founder and CEO, Abdullahi Ali, as a person of interest. Additionally, Maine State Representative Deqa Dhalac, a Democrat and former assistant executive director at Gateway, has also been named in this context.
Neither Ali nor Dhalac has responded to requests for comments from NewsNation regarding these allegations. Moreover, Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills has also not provided any comment on the matter.
NewsNation has reached out to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for their input on this unfolding situation, but there has been no immediate response.
