With this strong opposition, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson faces a tight vote. He has kept the House out of session for over 50 days, hoping to pressure Senate Democrats, but now he must navigate a delicate path to secure the bill's passage.
While Johnson can afford to lose only two votes with his 219-member majority, there are potential defectors on both sides. Groups like Indivisible and MoveOn are calling for Schumer to step down, with MoveOn's Katie Bethell stating, 'It's time for Senator Schumer to make way for leaders who will fight fire with fire when working people's basic needs are at stake.'
