Toto Wolff reveals the key factor Mercedes considered in George Russell's contract extension negotiations
Following the recent confirmation that George Russell will remain as a Mercedes driver in 2026, Toto Wolff has discussed a critical detail that the team had to factor in when renewing his contract.
In an exclusive interview, Wolff revealed that one of the key considerations was George Russell's progression to a more senior role within the team. This shift in status required Mercedes to "readjust" and "recalibrate" certain terms in Russell's contract, a deal that was announced just before the United States Grand Prix.
The speculation about the Silver Arrows' driver line-up for 2026 persisted for some time earlier in the season, with Max Verstappen linked to the team despite holding a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028. Once Verstappen publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull for next year, the focus shifted to confirming the futures of Russell and his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
Russell himself revealed in August that it was a matter of "when not if" he would sign a new contract to remain with the team into 2026. Wolff echoed this sentiment, expressing his hope to "stay with Kimi and George as it stands."
The confirmation of Russell's and Antonelli's continued partnership at Mercedes was announced in October. Wolff commented on the announcement, emphasizing the team's desire to take a measured approach to negotiations, ensuring everyone's satisfaction.
During a recent F1 visit to Austin, Wolff was asked about the specific details that took longer to finalize Russell's deal. He explained that Russell's advancement to a more senior status within the team was a significant factor.
"When you sign or renew a contract with a driver who has progressed from a junior role to a lead driver, demonstrating his capabilities, you need to readjust and recalibrate certain terms," Wolff stated. "That's exactly what we did, and the process is now complete."
Russell, who has been with the Brackley-based outfit since 2022, stepped up as the team's lead driver this season after Lewis Hamilton's departure to Ferrari. Russell's performance has been impressive, with several podium finishes and victories in Canada and Singapore, currently placing him fourth in the Drivers' Championship. Mercedes is now focused on regaining its position in the Teams' Championship, having lost P2 to Ferrari following the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
