Three former South Carolina women's basketball players find themselves in a perilous situation in Israel during the ongoing air strikes on Iran. The school is actively working to facilitate their safe return home.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley shared a heartfelt plea on social media, urging everyone to pray for the well-being of Tiffany Mitchell, Destiny Littleton, and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan. These talented athletes, along with other former WNBA players, are currently playing basketball in Israel, a country that, alongside the United States, launched a military attack on Iran on Saturday.
Staley's message emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, 'Please pray for our @GamecockWBB @TiffMitch25 @2121Mikiah @dstnylttltn24 who are in a war zone in Israel. We are working on a plan to get them home. Let us pray for our loved ones to return home safely as soon as possible! Thank you in advance.'
The trio's presence in Israel is notable, given their recent professional experiences. Mitchell played for the Seattle Storm last season, while Harrigan was a member of the Phoenix Mercury. The Israeli league also hosts other WNBA-connected players, including Victoria Vivians, Christyn Williams, Shyanne Sellers, Arella Guirantes, and Evina Westbrook.
In a tweet, Littleton herself expressed her hope for a safe return, writing, 'It's 12:48 am, and I'm going to attempt to get some sleep. Prayers for safety for everyone impacted.'
The situation highlights the challenges faced by athletes, who often find themselves in unexpected and potentially dangerous circumstances. It also underscores the importance of support systems and the power of community in times of crisis.
