Scotland is currently grappling with a significant surge in flu cases, with numbers more than doubling in a single week. This rapid increase has put a strain on healthcare resources and raised concerns about the upcoming flu season.
According to recent data from Public Health Scotland (PHS), lab-confirmed flu cases jumped dramatically between November 24th and 30th, reaching 1,759 compared to 845 the previous week. But that's not all. Hospital admissions due to the flu also saw a sharp rise, increasing by 70%, from 426 to 724. PHS has indicated that the activity levels have reached a medium level, and this is happening two weeks earlier than in previous seasons.
Health Secretary Neil Gray acknowledged the "challenging" situation, but reassured the public that there are sufficient flu vaccine supplies. Experts had previously predicted a prolonged flu season in the UK, with a new, more easily spread variant. The rise in flu cases began in mid-November.
Flu-like illnesses are on the rise across all age groups, but the increase is more intense among younger individuals, particularly those aged one to four and five to fourteen. However, about 40% of hospital admissions involve people aged 65 and over.
Sadly, the National Records of Scotland show that 17 deaths have been provisionally registered with flu as the underlying cause, and in 21 cases, flu was mentioned on the death certificate. During the peak of the last winter flu season, these figures were 137 and 171, respectively, with the majority of deaths occurring in people over 80 years old.
To assess the impact of this flu spike, BBC Scotland News contacted all 14 health boards and 32 councils. Some reported that pupil absences were consistent with previous years, while others, like East Lothian Council, saw a higher absence rate compared to the same week last year. Midlothian Council noted a "high" staff absence rate due to various reasons, including colds and flu.
Many health boards have reported higher flu cases this year, leading to precautionary measures such as ward restrictions and the use of face coverings. NHS Grampian reported that 33 people were hospitalized with the illness across the region, with flu patients occupying one in every 35 beds at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. A spokesperson stated that they have approximately 560% more flu patients in hospital compared to the same time last year.
In response to the surge, the health board for Ayrshire and Arran has suspended routine visits across all hospitals. Glasgow's health board is advising patients with mild to moderate flu symptoms to stay home and avoid A&E. Dumfries and Galloway's medical director has also urged people to avoid visiting hospitals, care homes, or other healthcare settings if they are unwell.
But here's where it gets controversial... Concerns have been raised regarding the availability of flu vaccinations. Community Pharmacy Scotland has reported increased demand for private flu vaccinations, with some pharmacies experiencing stockouts. Some eligible individuals are reportedly turning to community pharmacies for quicker or more convenient jabs, putting pressure on private stocks.
Neil Gray has expressed confidence in the Scottish government's "adequate stocks" of the vaccine, attributing the challenge to the early and rapid rise in flu cases. He emphasized the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing hospitalizations and reducing the spread of the illness, encouraging eligible individuals to get vaccinated.
Scottish Labour's health spokeswoman, Jackie Baillie, expressed concern over the latest figures, urging the government to improve vaccine uptake. She pointed out that there are 400,000 fewer adults vaccinated now than two years ago, with children's vaccination rates also down, and some areas yet to start vaccinations.
Everyone eligible for a flu jab should have received a notification, but those who haven't can book an appointment on the NHS Inform website.
