China's January 2026 auto market sales reveal a fascinating trend: a shift towards domestic electric vehicles, with BYD taking the lead!
The BYD Song series secured the top spot in wholesale passenger vehicle sales, selling an impressive 42,227 units in January, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This is a significant achievement, especially considering the overall market's 6.2% year-on-year decline. But here's where it gets interesting: the Song series is entirely composed of new energy vehicles (NEVs).
The Song lineup includes the 2026 Song Pro DM-i, 2026 Song L DM-i, and several ADAS-equipped variants. And this is the part most people miss: the Song Ultra EV, with its impressive range of up to 710 km, is set to join the family in Q3 2026. This expansion showcases BYD's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Ranking second and third are the Geely Galaxy EX2 (Xingyuan) and Geely Boyue, respectively, both with over 41,000 units sold. Tesla's Model Y and Xiaomi's YU7 also made a strong showing, ranking 4th and 5th, respectively, among the top 17 models with wholesale volumes exceeding 20,000 units. These rankings highlight the growing popularity of NEVs, with 13 out of the 17 top models being electric.
The wholesale penetration rate of NEVs in January reached a substantial 43.8%, a 1.3% increase year-on-year. Even more impressive, domestic brand NEVs boasted a penetration rate of 57.9%. However, retail sales tell a slightly different story. While NEV retail sales reached 596,000 units, they experienced a 20.0% year-on-year decrease, resulting in a lower penetration rate of 38%.
