CHOICE: Empowering Women with BRCA Mutations
The CHOICE project, launched in June 2025, is a beacon of hope for women carrying BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. These mutations, which play a crucial role in DNA repair, can significantly increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. While preventive measures exist, emotional barriers and misinformation often prevent women from taking action.
CHOICE aims to change this narrative by providing healthcare professionals with the tools and resources they need to support informed decision-making. BreastSCan: Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Screening
Starting in September 2025, the BreastSCan project is set to revolutionize breast cancer screening across Europe. By creating a diverse dataset of mammography and screening images from participating countries, BreastSCan will integrate this data into the Cancer Image Europe platform, a federated infrastructure for cancer imaging.
The project will test and validate AI tools to improve diagnostic accuracy and streamline screening processes. These tools will focus on key areas such as image preprocessing, breast density classification, lesion detection, and risk prediction. By fostering collaboration among hospitals, researchers, and AI developers, BreastSCan will enhance data sharing and align with broader European health data initiatives, including the European Health Data Space.
UNICA: Connecting Imaging Data for Cancer Research
Also launched in September 2025, the UNICA project will connect imaging data for breast, lung, and prostate cancers across 12 medical centres in Europe. By standardizing and contributing this data to the Cancer Image Europe platform, UNICA will enable researchers to develop reliable and transparent AI models for cancer screening and analysis.
The project will demonstrate the practical benefits of AI-driven screening tools through pilot studies and encourage patient participation. This approach aims to build trust, enhance research opportunities, and promote patient engagement in data-driven innovation.
