Bold opening: A Cambridgeshire village road reopens three weeks early, surprising everyone after an emergency upgrade project.
A small stretch of the B1049 Twenty Pence Road in Wilburton, near Ely, had been closed since 6 January to carry out essential works and upgrade a pipeline. Anglian Water had planned to keep the road shut until March, citing safety concerns and the scale of the area and machinery involved.
But on Friday, Anglian Water announced that the project was complete ahead of schedule. The works encompassed 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) of pipeline along Twenty Pence Road and the replacement of a leaking water meter located on the road. With the tasks finished, the road was reopened to traffic.
Before the early reopening, local businesses had reported a damaging impact on livelihoods due to the closure, and road users described the situation as a nightmare.
