Australia's Ashes XI: Meet the New Openers Weatherald and Doggett (2026)

Get ready for an exciting start to the Ashes series as Australia announces its first Test team, and two players are set to make their international debuts!

The Big Debuts

Opener Jake Weatherald and fast bowler Brendan Doggett will step onto the Perth pitch for their first-ever Ashes Test match. While Doggett's selection was almost a given after Josh Hazlewood's injury, the choice between Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne for the opening spot was a tough one for the Australian selectors.

A New Opening Partnership

Weatherald, hailing from the Northern Territory, will now partner Usman Khawaja, becoming Khawaja's sixth opening partner since David Warner's retirement from Test cricket in January 2024. Stand-in captain Steve Smith praised Weatherald's courage and his ability to face fast bowlers head-on during practice, saying, "He's got a lot of courage... He wants to face bowlers the entire time."

Smith added, "He's been selected for his exceptional performances over the last 18 months, particularly at the top of the order for Tasmania. We're hoping he can bring that same form to the Test arena."

A Missed Opportunity for Webster

However, Weatherald's selection means that his Tasmania teammate, Beau Webster, will miss out. Webster, who made his remarkable debut against India in January, has played seven Tests since then.

A Rare Occurrence

It's been a while since Australia has fielded two debutants in the same Test match. The last time this happened was in January 2019 when Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson faced Sri Lanka.

Labuschagne's Return

Marnus Labuschagne, who was dropped for the Caribbean tour after a lean patch, is back in the team due to his outstanding form for Queensland this summer. Smith highlighted Labuschagne's importance to the team, saying, "When Marnus is batting at his best at number three, we become a very strong cricket side."

Green's Role

Cameron Green, who has recently returned to bowling after playing as a batter-only in his four Tests this year, will move back to his original position at number six. However, Green is being eyed as Australia's long-term number four when Steve Smith eventually retires from Test cricket.

England's Strategy

England, aiming to capitalize on the traditional pace and bounce of the Perth pitch, has named a 12-man squad for the first Test, including both speedsters Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.

Media Spotlight

The media spotlight will be on both captains, with Ben Stokes addressing the press on Thursday, following Steve Smith's media appearance. This Ashes series is shaping up to be one of the closest in Australia in over 40 years.
