Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation has been a top-selling product, ranking fifth among liquid foundations in the US and second in Europe, according to Circana data. But why change something that's already a hit? Richard Pinabel, Global President of Armani Beauty, explains, "You need to evolve with the times and innovation. You cannot stay static because things are changing, the world is moving."
The foundation's makeover has been a four-year journey, resulting in a refreshed formula and an expanded shade range. The new Luminous Silk Foundation will feature 18 additional shades, bringing the total to 44, ensuring a perfect match for a diverse range of skin tones. It will also have a less perfumed scent, be non-comedogenic, and include new ingredients like glycerin, niacinamide, Mediterranean lily extract, and white lupine extract.
A Delicate Balance
Pinabel acknowledges the potential backlash from reformulating a beloved product. He says, "We’ve always said we need to do it the same, but better, which is difficult."
To ensure the new foundation meets the high standards of its users, Armani Beauty relied on its makeup artist ambassadors for honest reviews. Celebrity makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez, who works with renowned stars, praised the foundation's smoother finish and longer-lasting wear.
Celebrating Loyalty and Innovation
The campaign, "The Glow Secret is Out," pays homage to the foundation's loyal makeup artist followers, who were among the first to embrace the product and have been instrumental in its success. Pinabel notes, "[The makeup artists] made it their secret weapons backstage, on-set, and on-stage. For years, we said it was their best-kept secret, and they transformed it into a true cult favorite."
Cinema Connections and Pop-Up Experiences
Armani Beauty's relaunch strategy includes a cinematic twist, with the new Luminous Silk Foundation making its debut at a pre-party for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, worn by ambassador Sydney Sweeney. The foundation will also grace the red carpet at the award show, featuring stars like Renate Reinsve and Natasha Lyonne.
Pinabel reveals that Armani Beauty has become the official beauty partner for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), further cementing its connection to the film industry. He adds, "We have a longstanding history with cinema, starting with American Gigolo, where Richard Gere wore Armani suits. There’s a strong link between Mr. Armani and cinema."
Engaging Experiences and Pop-Up Events
To engage with its audience, Armani Beauty is taking the Luminous Silk Foundation on a journey through The Grove in Hollywood from January 16 to 18. The brand has collaborated with La La Land Kind Café to create custom Luminous Silk lattes and will offer masterclasses with celebrity makeup artists like Gonzalez and Nam Vo. Guests can also shade-match the foundation and take home a gifted bottle, which will be available in stores from January 19.

Pinabel emphasizes the importance of in-person experiences, especially for a foundation launch that requires shade matching. He says, "We’re always trying to find a good balance between online and offline. Beauty offline is very important."
The foundation's online soft launch in December saw strong early sales, with the US, UK, and Spanish markets performing exceptionally well. The Luminous Silk Foundation's demographic is expanding, attracting millennials and Gen Zs through interactive events like the In the Spotlight franchise, which offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into Armani Beauty's world.

Armani Beauty's future looks promising, with L'Oréal Group's license extension to 2025. Pinabel hints at more exciting developments, saying, "I think it’s going to be the year of Armani with one big surprise coming."
