€25 Million School Extension: A Game-Changer for Education in Cork's Northside (2026)

Imagine a transformative leap in education on Cork's northside—this is not just any development; it represents the most significant educational investment in the area in the last four decades. A substantial extension project, valued at over €25 million, is set to break ground in early January, marking a pivotal moment for local schools.

The Department of Education has given the green light for construction at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG school, which shares its campus with the historic North Monastery. This ambitious project will encompass an impressive 4,600 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 700 students, including the addition of two specialized classrooms for students with special educational needs.

Principal Donal Ó Buachalla expressed his enthusiasm to The Echo, stating, "This represents the largest educational investment on the northside in four decades. It’s going to be fantastic for both the school and the surrounding community." He noted that a contractor has already been selected and intends to commence work within the first two weeks of January. The completion of this extensive project is projected to take approximately two years, a timeline that reflects three years of meticulous planning and coordination with the Department of Education.

With these new facilities, the school plans to broaden its curriculum by introducing subjects like graphics and home economics, thereby enriching the educational offerings available to students. Principal Ó Buachalla extended his gratitude to those who have played a role in advancing the project, including the dedicated board of management and the architectural team led by Joseph O’Brien at KOBW architecture, along with supportive officials from the Department.

In total, the project's financial outlay will reach €25.2 million. Additionally, the school has ambitious plans for a sports development initiative that includes an all-weather playing field, which is expected to require an additional €2 million.

Colm Burke, the Fine Gael TD representing the area, emphasized the significance of this construction approval, referring to it as “a very important day for education on the northside of Cork city.” He, along with his party colleague Councillor Damian Boylan, celebrated this milestone, describing it as a strong endorsement of educational choice and support for the Irish language among families wishing to pursue secondary education through Gaeilge.

Fianna Fáil TD Pádraig O’Sullivan also shared his congratulations, highlighting the achievement of the principal and the board in bringing this project to fruition: “It's a testament to the considerable investment the Government continues to make, especially in education and our youth.”

Moreover, this development coincides with an announcement from Michael Moynihan, the Cork TD and Minister for Special Education and Inclusion, regarding a substantial €7.2 million investment for schools throughout Cork. This funding will be distributed via the Minor Works and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) grant schemes, aimed at modernizing classrooms and ensuring that educational facilities remain suitable for contemporary needs.

Mr. Moynihan remarked, “This investment goes beyond mere infrastructure. It aims to ensure that every child in Cork, whether they come from our largest urban centers or the smallest rural communities, learns in an environment that is safe, modern, and equipped with the necessary technology.”

This investment is a major step forward, but the implications for educational equity and resource distribution are worth pondering. What do you think about these developments? Do you see this as a turning point for education in your community, or are there other areas that need more attention? Share your thoughts!
